Dental Crowns & Bridges in Hopewell, VA
Sometimes multiple fillings or a crack in a tooth makes it structurally unsound, meaning it could collapse at any moment. Dental crowns go over the top of these teeth like a hard hat to prevent that from happening.
Like cracks in windshields, cracks in teeth don’t get better over time. It will eventually split and can cause major damage. We’ll put in a crown, a tooth-colored ceramic covering that fits over the top of your tooth, to prevent those problems and protect it.
During each exam and cleaning, we’ll look at all existing fillings to make sure they are in good shape.
If we find a crack or a problem with an old filling, we’ll remove it and check for cavities underneath. Once we know there is no tooth decay, we’ll usually add new filling material to act as a strong foundation and put a crown over top of it.
To replace missing teeth, you might need a bridge.
Like the pillars that hold up a suspension bridge, we put crowns on the teeth on either side of the empty space to anchor your replacement teeth.
Bridges are permanent—they don’t come in and out like dentures—and they are a great option for individuals who aren’t good candidates for implant surgery.
Plus, if you happen to already need crowns on those surrounding teeth, bridges end up being a perfect 2-in-1 solution!

Frequently asked questions about dental crowns
Why would I need a dental crown?
There are three main reasons you would need a dental crown.
The most common reason you might need a dental crown is because there’s not enough healthy tooth left to support a filling. Just like with everything, fillings eventually wear down and break, often getting a cavity around them. If the tooth already has a large filling, there is often not enough strong tooth left to refill it by the time we clean out the old filling and cavity underneath. In those situations, a crown offers much more strength since it acts like a hardhat that completely covers the tooth.
Another reason you might need a dental crown is that your tooth is cracked and needs 360 degree support to prevent the crack from getting worse and eventually splitting the tooth. (Split happens!) Whether you crack it playing sports, falling on your face, or even just eating peanut brittle, it hurts to bite down and a filling won’t fix it. Oftentimes, a dental crown can save your cracked tooth and get you out of pain.
You might also need a dental crown after a root canal to protect the tooth from fracture.
Are dental crowns permanent?
Dental crowns are made of extremely durable ceramic materials and are matched to the nearby teeth to make sure they look and feel completely natural. Because they are cemented on, they aren’t removable and are designed to last a long time. If your crown ever develops a cavity underneath or becomes damaged, it will need to be replaced. A replacement crown will keep your natural tooth structure protected, and ensure that your smile will continue to look great.
How long do dental crowns last?
How long your dental crown lasts depends mostly on how well you care for it. The average lifespan for a dental crown is between 5-15 years for most people, but some patients can keep their crown for even longer. As mentioned, if your crown ever develops a cavity underneath or fractures, it will need to be replaced.
This is one of the reasons that it’s important to come to City Point Dental for six-month check-ups with Dr. Daniel Baker. He’ll take a look at your smile and your dental crown, and make sure that everything looks shipshape. If he notices an issue with your crown, he can recommend any necessary treatment and keep your smile looking bright and beautiful.
How do I care for my new dental crown?
Good at-home oral hygiene and routine visits to City Point Dental are essential if you want to keep your natural teeth healthy. And we’ve got some good news! That’s all you need if you want to keep your new crown in good shape, too!
Make sure that you brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, and floss once per day, too. Eat a “tooth-healthy” diet that’s low in sugar, and make sure to come and see Dr. Baker every six months for a checkup. Most of the time, Dr. Baker and his team will recommend an additional fluoride treatment after your teeth are cleaned to act as extra protection from cavities around your fillings and crowns. That’s all there is to it!
Does it hurt to get a crown?
Getting a crown is very similar to getting a filling. We make sure you are completely numb and comfortable during the whole procedure and provide plenty of breaks so that your jaw doesn’t get tired. If you don’t like the noise of the drill, we have ear plugs (or Dr. Baker can sing for you while he works!)
Right after getting a crown, it is normal to have some tenderness and possibly some temperature sensitivity as your tooth adjusts. If you’re worried about your tooth or you think your pain is abnormal, please contact City Point Dental right away! Dr. Baker can always take a look at your crown to make sure everything looks normal.
Frequently asked questions about dental bridges
How long does a dental bridge last?
A dental bridge is a popular solution for replacing missing teeth. One of the most common questions patients have is about the lifespan of a dental bridge. While the exact lifespan can vary depending on various factors, a well-maintained dental bridge can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, and in some cases even longer.
The durability of a dental bridge depends on several factors, including the materials used, oral hygiene practices, and your overall dental health. Typically, dental bridges made from high-quality materials (like the ones we use at City Point Dental) tend to last longer than those made from less durable materials.
The best thing you can do that make sure your dental bridge lasts is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Additionally, avoiding habits such as biting down on hard objects or using your teeth as tools can help prevent damage to your dental bridge.
If you take proper care of your dental bridge and follow your dentist's recommendations, you can expect it to serve you well for many years.
Is it painful to get a dental bridge?
We know the thought of undergoing dental procedures can be intimidating for people, and it's natural to wonder if getting a dental bridge is a painful process. However, with advancements in modern dentistry, the procedure for getting a dental bridge is generally pretty straightforward and minimally uncomfortable.
Before the procedure begins, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area, keeping you from feeling pain during the treatment. You may experience some pressure or mild discomfort as the dentist prepares the teeth that will hold the bridge and takes impressions of your mouth, but it shouldn’t be painful.
Once the dental bridge is ready, your dentist will carefully place and adjust it to ensure a comfortable fit. Some patients may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort in the days following the procedure, but over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough to help.
It's important to remember that everyone's pain tolerance and experience may vary. If you have any concerns about pain or discomfort during the dental bridge procedure, don't hesitate to discuss them with your dentist. They will be able to address your concerns and ensure your comfort throughout the process.
How much does a dental bridge cost?
The cost of a dental bridge can vary depending on several factors, including the materials used, the complexity of the case, and the location of the dental practice. Generally, the cost of a dental bridge can range from $500 to $1,200 per tooth.
It's important to note that this is just a general price range, and the actual cost may be higher or lower depending on your specific needs. During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your case and provide you with a personalized treatment plan and cost estimate.
While dental bridges may seem like an investment, they offer a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring your smile's functionality and aesthetics. Additionally, our practice offers flexible payment options to fit your budget.
To get an accurate cost estimate for your dental bridge, it's best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Daniel Baker. He will be able to assess your unique situation, discuss your treatment options, and provide you with a detailed breakdown of the costs involved.
